Get Happy

Being happy doesn’t mean everything is perfect. It means you’ve decided to look beyond the imperfections. – Anonymous

This week was one of those days- particularly today. I knew I had to push through so I did the gym and yoga thing but I went bitterly. Truth be told, yoga last night was exactly what the doctor ordered. I’m fairly certain I got a hardcore REM sleep on during savasana. The kind of savasana where you disappear from yourself entirely only to wake up slightly confused while simultaneously rested. Mmmmmmm. Take me back.

After work I decided to skip a run, despite knowing it would make me feel better. Instead I chose to spend time with Tilly. We went on a walk, a pet store, I forced her to try on a shark costume… Normal things. As soon as I got home I plopped on the couch and turned on my guilty pleasure- couples therapy. I can’t help but to love any show that makes me feel better about any turmoil in my own life.

Randomly I got an email from happier.com about having a better day after a bad one… Are you there god? It’s me, Talia. I clicked on the link figuring it couldn’t hurt and I perused a few articles until I stumbled upon this one: 5 habits that keep me sane and make me happier.

If this lady says this can make me sane and happier, let’s do it. Here’s my reflection of a few items on her list and how I can incorporate this article into my own life:

Write down at least 3 things every day that I am grateful for.
1. Today I am healthy.
2. That I have a partner that has the same love of life that I do.
3. The people in my life that love me unconditionally regardless of… Me.

Go for an early morning walk.
Now that I have Tilly I have been going on a short walk every morning around 5:30. It’s exhausting pulling myself out of bed but once I’m up, I’m up. As the author of the article suggests, it does get the day started nicely.

Always have one thing on the calendar I’m looking forward to.
Tomorrow I have night plans with my girls, Saturday it have a day date with John, and a friends birthday party at night. Every Monday a club I run at work meets and I look forward to the active discussions we will have every week. In the winter John and I are going to the Florida Keys together. This does make life exciting. In the past I lived for my weekends but now I live for special days with people I love.

Today I felt exhausted and depleted. I knew it was a day that required me to pay it forward and to drag myself out and up from a rut. I love my job. I love my love. I love life. I guess every once in a while we need to remind ourselves these truths. And to suck it up. Because today I am healthy, I have a partner that has the same love of life that I do, and there are people in my life that love me unconditionally regardless of… Me.
